Mirellas and … - Documentation of UFO project
by Hermann Hiller, bangaloREsident@Jaaga
Marc Auge describes places such as airports or highway knots as non-places. These non-places are found worldwide and are subordinated first to their usefulness in a linked-up world. In the so-called UFOs (Under the Flyover) here in Bangalore, Hermann Hiller found one such non-place.
Artistically, the place should become a marked, an into-a-living transformed, defined place through artificial interventions. Here, artificial elements play an important role, as they animate the scenery. The material originates from the direct surrounding of the non-place. In Hermann’s project, car mirrors, rickshaw mirrors, truck mirrors that have been taken out of their original context, are combined with umbrellas and sunshades – so-called mirellas – to bring light under the flyovers, the UFO. In daily life, car mirrors provide everyone’s main point-of-view when it comes to traffic jams etc. – in other words: mirrors shape our perception of the environment. Also on display are reflection tapes, primarily known from construction workers’ or policemen’s vests, which are combined with classic Indian attire like the sari: overwriting tradition with modernity. These reflective vests are transformed into bags, so-called Nichtüberfahren under the Flyover, UFO, sarees, bags, and mirellas create a scene that appears like a photo shoot. Camera, tripod, lights, generators are placed around, visitors become players by buying reflective accessories, hence reflecting their environment. Photos:
